DR. LEONID KASHCHENEVSKY

Experience:

Dr. Kashchenevsky has more than 35 years of experience (since 1973) in theory, design, development and manufacturing of ultra-high precision hydrostatic spindles, hydrostatic slides and hydrostatic spin tables.  In his PhD thesis, he developed analytical methods to calculate main characteristics for multi-recess journal bearings. He also developed a theoretical approach to predict rotational accuracy for hydrostatic spindles.   Every spindle he designs is based on detailed theoretical analysis, and benefits from his industry experience and practical skills in hydrostatic spindle assembling (including match lapping), testing and accuracy measurements.

Dr. Kashchenevsky effective and innovative implementation of hydrostatic spindle technology makes ELKA Precision the first company in the world to develop ultra-high speed, high precision, hydrostatic grinding spindles with high frequency axial oscillations of the rotating shaft that can achieve rotational speeds of up to 120,000 revolutions per minute (RPM).  These spindles can be successfully used to grind fuel injector’s components.   He also has extensive experience in manufacturing hydrostatic spindles for the ultra-high precision grinding of optical components.   Spindles he developed have been installed on optics grinding machines in USA, Germany and the United Kingdom.  He also has experience in design and manufacturing of large size ultra precision hydrostatic spindles and hydrostatic spin tables used for diamond turning, hard turning and grinding applications. The largest hydrostatic spindle he’s developed is used to turn turbine shafts with weight up to 200 tons.

During his successful career in this field, Dr. Kashchenevsky has published more than 25 papers in professional journals and has been awarded more than 20 inventions.  Spindles developed by Dr. Kashchenevsky include:

·                     Ultra-high accuracy hydrostatic grinding spindles with maximum speed of up to 6,000 RPM and with rotational accuracy of 0.02 μm.  More than 60 spindles of this type have been installed on high precision grinding machines in Germany.

·                     A special hydrostatic spindle for Jig Grinding Machines that allows significant improvement of geometrical accuracy for ground holes.

·                     Set of ultra-high precision hydrostatic spindles for internal grinding and micro milling applications with maximum speeds up to 120,000 RPM, up to 140,000 RPM and up to 250,000 RPM.

In December 2007, he received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to develop an Ultra High Speed and Precision Hydrostatic Grinding Spindle with Axial Oscillations of Rotating Shaft from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).  This was followed by a prestigious Phase II SBIR grant in 2009 to develop and manufacture a prototype of this new hydrostatic spindle and test it to prove its advantages compared to existing technology.  Strategic assistance in support of this grant came from the Connecticut SBIR Office, an initiative of Connecticut Innovations in Rocky Hill.
